Pac-12 roundup: Jason Shelley, Armand Shyne help Utah beat Oregon 32-25
In his first start, Jason Shelley ran for two touchdowns and Armand Shyne had 174 yards rushing to power Utah past Oregon 32-25 on Saturday in Salt Lake City.
The Utes lost Tyler Huntley, their starting quarterback, and running back Zack Moss, who had already rushed for 1,092 yards this season, to injury within a few days of each other.
Shelley utilized quick passes, a strong running game and some misdirection in the offense to pass for 262 yards. The redshirt freshman completed 18 of 31 passes with no interceptions.
On a drive keyed by a 36-yard pass to Jaylen Dixon, Shelley scored the go-ahead touchdown from 2 yards out with 6:48 to play.
The Utah defense, which dominated in the first quarter and then was on its collective heels when Justin Herbert starting finding receivers all over the field, stopped the Ducks on the ensuing possession when Jaylon Johnson broke up a fourth-down pass.
Herbert went 20 of 33 for 288 yards but was sacked four times and simply ran out of time. Dillon Mitchell caught eight passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns, including multiple acrobatic grabs.
Utah lost more than 80 percent of their offensive firepower when Huntley broke his collarbone at Arizona State and Moss hurt his knee this week at practice.
Shyne’s running prowess bolstered a sustained drive that gobbled up Oregon’s time outs and culminated in Matt Gay’s sixth field goal – a Utah school record – from 24 yards. That left the Ducks only 15 seconds to try and score.
Arizona State 31, UCLA 28: In his final home game, Manny Wilkins ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and the Sun Devils kept their Pac-12 South title hopes alive with a victory over the Bruins in Tempe, Arizona.
Eno Benjamin carried a career-high 34 times for 182 yards and a score for the Sun Devils, who won their third straight – all over Pac-12 South foes – and became bowl eligible under first-year coach Herm Edwards.
UCLA lost its third straight but stayed with the Sun Devils throughout the game.
Wilton Speight, starting over freshman Dorian Thompson-Robinson at quarterback for the Bruins, completed 26 of 35 yards and two touchdowns, both to tight end Caleb Wilson, who had 11 catches for 164 yards.
Wilkins completed 16 of 22 for 199 yards and a touchdown but had an interception returned for a score. He rushed for 60 yards in 14 carries. N’Keal Harry, most likely in his final home game since he’s expected to leave for the NFL, had seven catches for 100 yards.
Stanford 48, Oregon State 17: Colby Parkinson caught all four of K.J. Costello’s touchdown passes and the Cardinal beat the Beavers in Stanford, California, to become bowl eligible.
Bryce Love scored a touchdown and rushed for 90 yards, his most since gaining 136 against USC on Sept. 8. Cameron Scarlett also scored for the Cardinal with a career-long run of 41 yards. Dorian Maddox scored on a 1-yard run, his first career touchdown.
The Beavers’ Jake Luton passed for 205 yards and touchdowns of 63 yards to Trevon Bradford and 7 yards to Noah Togiai. Bradford finished with five receptions for 120 yards. Teammate Jermar Jefferson rushed for 109 yards.
Last year the teams combined for 486 total yards in Stanford’s 15-14 win. The teams had 632 by halftime Saturday.
Costello threw for 342 yards and touchdown passes of 28, 9, 75 and 5 yards. He’s thrown four touchdowns in three games this season, the most since Andrew Luck did it in 2011. Parkinson finished with six catches for 166 yards.
California 15, USC 14: Chase Garbers threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score, and the Golden Bears snapped their 14-game losing streak against the Trojans with a win in Los Angeles.
Vic Wharton III made his first TD reception of the season as the Golden Bears rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit and secured bowl eligibility for just the second time in seven seasons with their first win at the Coliseum in 18 years.
Cal did all of its scoring in an eight-minute span of the third quarter, starting with a safety when a shotgun snap by USC went 22 yards backward into the end zone.
J.T. Daniels passed for 180 yards and threw two TD passes to Tyler Vaughns, but the Trojans were shut out in the second half of their third loss in four games.
