Shadle Park graduate Nick Hauger wins NCAA West Regional cross country meet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – University of Portland’s Nick Hauger (Shadle Park High) used a strong closing kick Friday to take the individual title and lead the Pilots to the team title at the NCAA West Regional cross country meet at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.

Hauger, a redshirt senior, completed the 10,000-meter course in 29 minutes, 42.4 seconds, outkicking Arizona’s Carlos Villarreal (29:43.4), Loyola Marymount’s Koby Pederson (29:44.1) and Washington senior Tanner Anderson (North Central), who ran 29:44.6.

Portland scored 77 points to hold off Washington (82) and Boise State (102). Washington State (218) was the top area finisher, in seventh, paced by Chandler Teigen (30:05.5) in 27th.

Gonzaga freshman James Mwaura (29:48.9) placed 10th, leading the Bulldogs (229) to ninth place.

Oregon (44) edged Boise State (49) for the women’s title. Washington State (325) placed 12th.

Boise State’s Allie Ostrander won the individual title, finishing the 6,000 in 19:09.0.

Idaho’s Kara Story was the top area finisher, placing 35th in 20:41.5. Vallery Korir led WSU, placing 49th in 20:59.6.

  • Colorado junior John Dressel (Mt. Spokane High) placed 12th at the Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah, running the 10,000 in 29:29.5.
