Washington State remains at No. 8 in College Football Playoff rankings

Washington State remained at the No. 8 spot in the second edition of the College Football Playoff rankings, released Tuesday night.

The Cougars needed a late touchdown Saturday in Pullman to defeat California 19-13.

WSU (8-1, 5-1) also stayed put at No. 10 in the Associated Press poll, released Sunday. The Cougars and Washington (25th) are the only two Pac-12 teams in the CFP rankings. The Huskies were unranked last week, when the College Football Playoff released its initial rankings, but slipped in Tuesday after a 27-23 win over Stanford.

The only other Pac-12 team to appear in last week’s rankings was Utah, which dropped out after a 38-20 loss to Arizona State on Saturday.

West Virginia, which leapfrogged the Cougars in the AP poll, came in at No. 9 in the CFP rankings. Only two teams in last week’s top 10 lost Saturday. One of those was LSU, which checked in at No. 4 in the initial CFP rankings, but tumbled down three spots to No. 7 following a loss to No. 1 Alabama. Kentucky, the ninth-ranked team last week, lost to No. 5 Georgia and slipped to No. 11.

The top 10 shook out like this: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 LSU, No. 8 Washington State, No. 9 West Virginia and No. 10 Ohio State.

Washington State travels to Colorado on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on ESPN.
