Towson transfer Zane Martin expected to visit Gonzaga in June

Zane Martin, a high-scoring guard who is transferring from Towson, is expected to visit Gonzaga next month.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Martin averaged 19.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists as a sophomore last season while earning second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors. He had three 30-point games, including a 30-point second half against Elon.

Martin will visit Gonzaga on June 22-24, shortly after visiting Mississippi on June 14-16, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello. Martin is planning to visit three more schools in June.

Gonzaga has been searching for immediate and long-term reinforcements at the guard position. Point guard Josh Perkins is entering his senior season and the Zags don’t have a proven backup.

Sophomore wing Zach Norvell Jr. averaged 12.7 points and started 29 games last season. Sophomore wing Corey Kispert, who opened the season as a starter before suffering an ankle injury, averaged 6.7 points.

Martin, who will sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules, declared for the NBA Draft in April but maintained the option of returning to the college game because he didn’t hire an agent.

Martin led Towson in nearly every offensive category, including assists. The Philadelphia native shot 45.8 percent from the field, including 38 percent on 3-pointers (71 of 187). He made nearly 70 percent of his team-high 161 free-throw attempts.
