Area roundup: WSU’s Brooks-Johnson wins her third Pac-12 heptathlon title

Washington State’s Alissa Brooks-Johnson tied a conference record by winning her third Pac-12 heptathlon title Sunday at the Combined Events Championships in Stanford, California.

Brooks-Johnson had lifetime bests in five of the seven events and also had a personal-best 5,977 points, second in WSU’s record book to Diana Pickler’s 6,205 points at the 2007 NCAA Championships.

Leading after Saturday’s first four events, she led off Sunday’s competition with a personal best of 19 feet, 4 inches in the long jump. Brooks-Johnson threw a season-best javelin distance of 136-6 but fell behind UCLA’s Kendall Gustafson by 40 points after Gustafson threw 152-9.

But Brooks-Johnson won the 800-meter finale in 2 minutes 14.82 seconds, nearly 10 seconds better than Gustafson, to wrap up the championship.

Baseball

Washington State 7, Oregon State 7, tie: WSU and Oregon State finished deadlocked after a lightning strike combined with the Beavers’ travel requirements resulted in the game being called in the top of the 10th inning in Pullman.

The third-ranked Beavers (35-7-1, 14-6-1 Pac-12) scored five runs in the seven to take the lead before the Cougars (14-25-1, 6-14-1) scored once in the bottom of the inning to tie. Blake Clanton hit his sixth homer of the season for WSU.

The tie was the first for WSU since 1992 and its first in conference play since 1936.

San Diego 5, Gonzaga 4 (11): Kevin Collard hit a two-out pinch-hit three-run homer to tie the game in the ninth and freshman Shane McGuire’s first homer gave the Toreros (24-20, 14-10 West Coast Conference) the win in the 11th over the visiting Bulldogs (21-27, 10-14).

Whitworth 7, Lewis-Clark State 5: Joel Condreay hit a two-run double during a five-run seventh inning and the Pirates defeated the Warriors in Lewiston in Whitworth’s season finale.

Whitworth finishes the year 17-20. LCSC is 38-11.

Condreay was 3 for 5 with three RBIs while starter Brady Simmelink (4-2) went six innings, giving up one run, five hits, two walks while fanning three.

Washington 7, Arizona State 6: A two-run homer from Joe Wainhouse in the ninth inning gave the Huskies (23-20, 13-8 Pac-12) a three-run lead and they survived a rally by the Sun Devils (19-27, 11-13) in the bottom of the inning to win in Phoenix.

Softball

Washington 5, Oregon State 3: Taylor Van Zee and Nawai Kaupe homered for the fifth-ranked Huskies (44-8, 15-8 Pac-12) who wrapped up the regular season with the win over the host Beavers (26-26, 7-14) in Corvallis.

Men’s soccer

Tri-Cities 3, Spokane 2: Jason Rodriguez scored in stoppage time to give Tri-Cities Alliance the win over the Shadow U23 in a Evergreen Premier League season opener at Spokane Falls CC on Saturday night.
