Gonzaga play-by-play broadcaster Tom Hudson battles through WCC Tournament opener with hoarse voice

LAS VEGAS – It was a tough night for Gonzaga radio broadcaster Tom Hudson.

But it could have been a slightly tougher night for Gonzaga fans attempting to follow along with Hudson as he tried to call Gonzaga’s quarterfinal showing on Saturday with a sore throat.

Throughout Gonzaga’s 83-69 win, Hudson, who is in his 16th year doing play-by-play for Gonzaga, forced a broadcast with a hoarse voice that made difficult to listen to at times.

At halftime, Hudson left the media table and returned to his seat with two cups of hot tea in hopes it would sooth his throat.

Former Gonzaga star Adam Morrison, who works alongside Hudson as a commentator, tried to take over for Hudson more often than usual in between plays to give his partner a chance to sip some tea.

“It was interesting,” Morrison said. “I thought I was going to have to do some play-by-play, but Huddy battled through it and we were fine. He told me just to talk more so I just rambled like I’m used to doing all the time.”

After the game Hudson was in pursuit of some other home remedies before he has to go back on the air on Monday when the Zags take on San Francisco in the semifinals. He tweeted a picture of a hearty bowl of soup with a side of saltine crackers.

“Trying to find my voice at the bottom of a bowl of chicken noodle soup,” he wrote.
