Area roundup: Eastern Washington’s Delaney Hodgins sets Big Sky record with 46 points
Delaney Hodgins scored a Big Sky Conference single-game record 46 points Friday as Eastern Washington’s women wrapped up the regular season with a 98-83 win over Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Hodgins, who shot 16 of 23 from the floor, including 7 of 7 on 3-pointers, broke the record of 41 points held by six players, most recently Maranne Johnson of Sacramento State this season.
EWU’s previous women’s record was 38, set by Vanessa Jones on Dec. 5, 1990.
Hodgins’ effort from long range was also a conference record.
Violet Kapri Morrow added 23 points for the Eagles (17-13, 12-6), who finished tied for third place with Weber State. The top four teams earn first-round byes to the Big Sky Tournament in Reno, Nevada, which begins Monday. EWU, the No. 3 seed, will open at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday.
Idaho 65, Southern Utah 57: Mikayla Ferenz scored 22 points, hitting 8 of 8 from the line, and the Vandals (17-12, 13-5 Big Sky) secured the No. 2 seed to the conference tournament by defeating the Thunderbirds (3-26, 2-16) at Cedar City, Utah.
Geraldine McCorkell added 12 points and four assists, Taylor Pierce scored 11 and Nejra Solo had 10 rebounds for Idaho, which trailed 14-2 before rallying.
The Vandals shot 16 of 18 from the line but were 9 of 33 on 3-pointers.
Whitney Johnson led the Thunderbirds with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Vandals, with a first-round bye, will open conference tournament play at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday.
Softball
Madelyn Carlson pitched eight strong innings and singled home Chelsey Hayes in the eighth to give Whitworth (4-6) a 3-2 win over William Paterson (New Jersey) in their second game at the Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Arizona.
The Pirates lost to 17th-ranked Moravian (Pennsylvania) 12-4 in five innings to open the day.
Natalie Edlin had two runs batted in for Whitworth.
- North Idaho improved to 5-1 with an 8-0 win over Southwestern University and a 14-5 win over Mercyhurst North East at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.
Boxing
Spokane’s Patrick Ferguson (11-0-1, 10 knockouts) claimed a unanimous 10-round decision over Mario Munoz (12-5-1, 4 KOs) on Thursday at the Coeur d’Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho.
Ferguson made the first defense of his WBC United States cruiserweight title. Two judges scored the bout 100-90 and the third scored it 99-91.
