Racism isn’t new

Congratulations to The Spokesman-Review for having the integrity to print a cartoon and editorial acknowledging the continued racism in America. The cartoon by Tim Campbell and accompanying editorial by Robert Samuels (“How it feels to be called a monkey,” June 2, 2018), emphasize that racism is not new, nor is it localized. Racism exists throughout the United States and the Inland Empire is not immune to it.

Liberals blame Donald Trump for the resurgence of racism, while conservatives blame Barack Obama. But racism in the United States is centuries old, it didn’t die off or go away, it’s here and always has been. What has changed is people’s willingness to expose racism and take a stand against it. The Spokesman’s coverage in last Saturday’s editorial page is an example of that courage. Thank you.
