Education notebook: Spokane Valley Youth Voice kicks off Monday

The city of Spokane Valley is inviting Spokane Valley high school students to join a new program designed to get youth involved in the community.

The first meeting of Spokane Valley Youth Voice is at 6 p.m. on Monday at CenterPlace, 2426 N. Discovery Place. Refreshments will precede the meeting at 5:30 p.m.

East Valley PEP team

shines on science day

The East Valley PEP Team, part of EVSD’s Highly Capable Program, were grand champions at the Silverwood Science Day held May 17. The event involved 120 teams. East Valley placed first, second and third in both the measurement and construction contests.

Cheney 2018 yearbook receives

national award for excellence

Cheney High School’s yearbook program has been awarded the 2018 National Yearbook Program of Excellence from Jostens, the leading producer of yearbooks and student-created content, for its 2018 publication, “Beneath the Surface.”

Jostens honors yearbook programs in both the fall and spring based on evaluations of inclusive and broad representation, generation of school engagement and management of the creation and production of the yearbook.

The CHS yearbook was created by editor in chief Haley Pemberton and staff members Shaun Allen, Abigail Blazon, Wyatt Boal, Katarina Cacikova, Alexander Clark, Shyla Courchaine, Dillon Dalton, Shelby Draper, Kyle Duncan, Isabel Duong, Alexis Ewen, Vanessa Flowers, Holly Flynn, Julliette Gaul, Kyliegh Giddens, Kelly Goforth, Olivia Grantier, Lindsay Hagreen, Donovan Hart, Niya Heiydt, Angel Imbrenda Mendoza, Caitlin Judd, Hannah Lemelin, Danielle Monzingo, Brennan Palmer, Keegan Paras, Max Pierson, Grace Sands and Richard VanNorman. Free summer activities set

for northeast Spokane students

Students in “The Zone” of northeast Spokane are invited to participate in a summer full of free activities, most of which will be held at Shaw Middle School.

The “Summer in the Zone” program is designed to help students maintain their academic skills over the summer and give them healthy activities to participate in. Activities include sports, STEM, art, music, games and more.

The program is open to all children entering grades K-12 who live in the area north of Gonzaga University, east of Division Street, west of Market Street and south of Francis Street. Students who attend will receive a free breakfast and a free lunch each day.

Class times vary, but classes are available Mondays through Fridays beginning June 18. The program ends Aug. 17.
