Area roundup: Washington State baseball defeats Grand Canyon with run in ninth inning
Justin Harrer’s two-out, run-scoring single to left field in the ninth inning Tuesday gave Washington State a 5-4 win over Grand Canyon in nonconference baseball in Phoenix.
Harrer’s single scored Dillon Plew, who led off the inning with a triple to right off Nick Ohanian (0-1).
Nick Strange (1-0) earned the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, including a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Cougars (2-3) built a 4-1 lead after 2 1/2 innings. Harrer and JJ Hancock had RBI singles in the first. James Rudkin doubled in a run in the second and Danny Sinatro added an RBI single in the third.
The Antelopes (1-3) tied the game at 4 with a two-run sixth, scoring the tying run when Quin Cotton advanced from third after a strikeout and rundown play.
Women’s basketball
Idaho guard Mikayla Ferenz was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season after averaging 26.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and seven assists in road wins against Montana State and Montana.
Ferenz, who also set the Big Sky’s single-season record for 3-pointers (100), has helped the Vandals post a nine-game winning streak.
The junior from Walla Walla leads the Big Sky and ranks sixth among NCAA Division I scoring with 22.8 points per game.
Ferenz has earned the honor five times.
The Vandals (15-10, 11-3 Big Sky) trail first-place Northern Colorado by one-half game. Idaho will complete its home schedule this week with games against Idaho State and Weber State, which are tied for third with 9-5 records.
- Whitworth’s Camy Aguinaldo was named Northwest Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 15.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and a conference-leading 5.3 assists per game. The 5-foot-3 guard from Honolulu, who is the first Pirates player to earn the honor, was also a second-team selection. Whitworth’s Madison Moffat and Grace Douglas earned honorable mention nods for the second consecutive season. Moffat, a junior, averaged 12.4 points per game and ranked second in the NWC with 10.3 rebounds per game. Douglas, a senior, averaged 12.8 ppg and led the NWC in 3-point shooting percentage (45.4).
