Second Amendment limits
Jeff Hall had a very well-thought out opinion on the Second Amendment (“It’s time that ‘every man be armed’,” Feb. 4). Much of his thoughts I agree with, and the thinking, I believe, is sound. But, I would only point out three statements that I’m quite sure are untrue.
1. “If the proposed legislation passes, I’d be a felon for taking an unlocked rifle to my gunsmith!”
There has been no legislation which would eliminate or limit gunsmiths and the traditional Second Amendment rights of gun ownership.
2. “The Second Amendment was written so that every citizen had the right to armed rebellion against his government or to repel foreign invaders.” The words “regulated militia” would infer that the right to bear arms could/should have some limits.
3. “Like California, Australia, England and Germany, innocent-sounding laws for safety snowball into confiscation.” I have many friends in California, none of whom have had their guns confiscated. And until Trump decides, I don’t think we’ll follow the example of Hitler’s Germany. Aside from the mass killing machines “incorrectly called” assault rifles, I totally agree with Mr. Hall’s opinion that we must concentrate on the underlying social problems rather than the “tools.” But, just as my freedom of speech is “limited,” I see nothing wrong with some “limits” on my Second Amendment “rights.”
