Land of civic virtue

I think it worthwhile to recall some thoughts of the late Justice Scalia regarding our country.

To paraphrase: America has civic virtue. We are generous, even to people outside our country. We value honesty, we are reliable, not quitters, self-reliant and believe in civility. We don’t have these qualities because we are free. We are free because we have these qualities. Freedom is a luxury only afforded by good society. When civic virtue diminishes, freedom will inevitably diminish.

With that in mind we see the main problem with Mr. Trump. Putting aside his policies, everything about Mr. Trump’s behavior works not to uplift civic virtue but to diminish it.
