Sheltering the homeless
My gratitude to both Spencer Gage for speaking his truth to power and the S-R for printing his guest opinion piece about tiny homes (“Tiny homes could solve homeless problem,” Dec. 12).
Given that many individuals and organizations have embraced the task of housing low-income people and supporting the homeless by creating hundreds of units, we were still challenged by the residents of Camp Hope at City Hall.
As some of us know, Ian Robertson was one of the first to take steps toward realizing a Tiny Home community in Spokane. The Rethinking Poverty: Freedom and Personhood Seminar in July 2017 raised our consciousness. Most of the pushback to Tiny Homes came from property owners fearing the effect on the value of their real estate. I think everyone should be more frightened by people with nothing to lose acting out in desperation as they try to cope without hygiene, counseling, health care, education/training, food and shelter.
