Area roundup: CCS women sweep through tournament
Alexia Novelli scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and CC Spokane completed a three-game sweep at the NWAC crossover tournament by defeating Mt. Hood 71-66 in overtime at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, Washington, on Sunday.
All-tournament selection Koyoma Young added 15 points including a 3-pointer with two minutes to play in overtime for a 67-64 lead. Tourney MVP Jessica Olson, who finished with 13 points, added a basket with 40 seconds left for a five-point lead.
Novelli’s jump shot with 52 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime.
CCS is 8-1. Mt. Hood is 9-4.
Umpqua 83, North Idaho 72, OT: Taylor Stricklin scored 33 points to lead the RiverHawks (8-0) over the Cardinals (5-2) on the first day of the NWAC crossover tournament in Coeur d’Alene.
NIC’s Sydnie Peterson made six 3-pointers and scored 20 points.
Boise State 73: Washington 69: Lewis and Clark HS graduate Riley Lupfer scored 22 points with the junior hitting a career-tying seven 3-pointers and the Broncos (8-2) won the Husky Classic in Seattle.
Lupfer took all but one of her 13 shots from beyond the arc in leading the Broncos, who shot 42 percent overall but were better from 3-point range at 14 of 30 for 47 percent. Braydey Hodgins made four 3-pointers and scored 19 points with Marta Hermida adding three treys and 12 points.
The Huskies (7-4) were strong inside, outrebounding Boise State 48-34 and outscoring the Broncos by 12 in the paint. But they shot just 34 percent and made only 5 of 22 from the arc.
Tied at halftime, the Huskies scored the first six points of the third quarter before the Broncos poured in five 3-pointers – three by Lupfer – and took a four-point edge into the final period.
Washington got within one with five minutes to go but Lupfer hit a 3-pointer and Hodgins a jumper. The Huskies were within two with 29 seconds left but Hodgins made two free throws with eight seconds to go.
Men’s basketball
CC Spokane 86, Skagit Valley 64: JR Delgado scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures and the Sasquatch (9-3) beat the Cardinals (8-4) to go 2-1 at the NWAC crossover tournament at Umpqua CC in Roseburg, Oregon.
Garrett White added 14 points and Dedrick Pakootas and Isaiah Gotell 10 each with the Sasquatch shooting just under 50 percent.
