Sports letters: ESPN needs to say ‘goodbye’ to Bill Walton

ESPN broadcaster Bill Walton stands in front of a fan cutout of his face during Gonzaga’s 81-79 win over Washington on Dec. 5 at the McCarthey Athletic Center. (Dan Pelle / The Spokesman-Review)

Why does ESPN continue to assign Bill Walton to cover college basketball? He is a self-serving bag of hot air whose only goal is to cast light on himself. He does not add insight to a game – he detracts from it with his unending efforts to let everyone know of his superior knowledge in all things. While he is talking about the geology of the Hawaiian Islands, or the trade winds in the Pacific, or the number of lakes surrounding Spokane, or the magnificent river flowing through our city, a great game of basketball is going on in front of him. Give him the mic at halftime so he can talk all he wants while we go to get another beer from the fridge. I had to find that old radio in my garage so I can turn off the audio the next time he starts to talk. Get rid of this guy.

Enough of Walton

Responding to Bill Johnson’s letter (Dec. 9). I’m with you, Bill. The only thing I can’t figure out is who is worse – Bill Walton or Dick Vitale. Thank heaven for the mute button.
