14-year-olds take car, crash into coffee stand and drive away

Three teens took a car from one of their parents to get coffee, but after crashing into the coffee stand, they fled, according to police records.

Nobody was hurt, and a 14-year-old boy was arrested, according to a news release from Spokane County Sheriff’s Department.

On Sunday at 12:40 p.m., workers at at Fueled Coffee Company at 12303 E. Grace Ave. in Spokane Valley called in a hit-and-run crash when a white Ford Explorer hit the stand. The car broke its headlight and turn signal, and it pushed the frame of the coffee stand inward. The car drove away, the news release stated.

A witness followed the car to an apartment complex at North Cherry Street and saw two girls leaving the car.

A deputy arrived and knocked on an apartment in the complex that was registered to the Ford’s license plates. A woman, one of the teen’s parents, answered the door, and the deputy told her of the crash. The woman yelled for her daughter and friend, who are both 14. The woman, who owns the car, “was very upset and said she never gave anyone permission to drive her car,” the news release stated.

The deputy learned that the two girls and their 14-year-old friend, a boy, were planning on walking to the coffee stand, but when the girls walked to the parking lot, they found the boy in the Ford. He told them to get in, and they did. He drove them to Fueled Coffee and hit the side of the building and drove away.

The woman who owns the vehicle told deputies she wants to press charges, and the male, who’s name is not being released, was booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Facility for Taking a Motor Vehicle without Permission and Hit and Run Property Damage.
