From staff reports

PORTLAND – Goals by Filip Kral and Jake McGrew in a 4:50 span of the second period weren’t nearly enough on Saturday night as the Spokane Chiefs managed just 20 shots, a season low, and fell 8-2 to the Portland Winterhawks in a Western Hockey League game at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Dawson Weatherill got the start in goal for the Chiefs, but lasted just one period, stopping 12 of 15 shots, before giving way to Bailey Brkin, who gave up the final five goals on 24 shots as the Winerhawks totaled 44 shots on net.

Kral scored for the second straight game, giving him three goals on the season. McGrew’s seventh goal of the season at the 16:11 mark made it 4-2, but Portland put it out of reach with two more goals in the final 2:07 of the period.

Spokane fell to 1-2 this season against Portland; the Chiefs (14-9-2-2) and Winterhawks are tied for second in the WHL’s U.S. Division, each with 32 points.

The Chiefs conclude a three-game road trip Wednesday night in Everett at 7:05,where they’ll face the U.S. Division-leading Silvertips.
