From staff reports

Now that temperatures have dipped slightly this weekend, consider heading to McNary National Wildlife Refuge for a free show.

Dozens of prehistoric-looking white pelicans, with their huge, hefty bills and impressive 9-foot wingspans are flocking to the refuge. Also not to be missed are the elegant great egrets, waiting patiently to nab a fish with their piercing, yellow bills.

You can see these impressive birds along with some other summer residents, such as black-necked stilts, killdeer and yellow-headed blackbirds. Take a walk around the trail or just bring binoculars and head directly to the ADA-accessible bird blind. The refuge is free and open sunrise to sunset.

The McNary National Wildlife Refuge is located at 64 Maple St. in Burbank, Washington.
