Gonzaga big man Rui Hachimura invited to Nike Basketball Academy

With a few months remaining before the Gonzaga Bulldogs take the court for the upcoming season, forward Rui Hachimura has a chance to test his skills against some of the nation’s top talent.

The rising junior was one of 25 collegiate standouts selected to participate in the Nike Basketball Academy in Los Angeles.

The invitation-only camp, which also includes some of the top high school players in the country, runs through Sunday.

Hachimura will have a chance to learn from and train with current and former NBA players which will include a combine experience, off-court workouts, drills, film sessions and 5-on-5 competition.

“This is an incredible opportunity,” Hachimura said in a university release. “I’m excited to represent Gonzaga University and our basketball program. I’m looking forward to learning a lot from this experience.”

Hachimura averaged 11.6 points per game, starting only twice during the 2017-18 season. He scored a team-high 12.9 points per West Coast Conference contest. The Toyama, Japan native was fourth in the conference shooting 56.8 percent from the field, and third shooting 60.3 percent from the field in league play.

Hachimura was named First Team All-West Coast Conference and Second Team District 9 by the NABC. He scored double-digits in 23 games this past season, reaching 20 points five times. He scored a career-high 25 points, with a career-high four blocks, in the Bulldogs’ second-round win over Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament. Hachimura grabbed 4.7 rebounds per game.
