One person shot, killed in deputy-involved incident north of Deer Park
A man was shot and killed in a confrontation with Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputies north of Deer Park on Friday afternoon.
At approximately 4 p.m., deputies responded to reports of an armed and possibly suicidal male at a single-vehicle crash, according to a sheriff’s office news release. Reports also stated that the man had struck multiple mailboxes with his vehicle, and that he had held a gun to his head.
Arriving within minutes at the 37000 block of North Sherman Road, a deputy located the man and attempted to de-escalate the “extremely tense scene,” according to the release. However, the man reached toward his waistband, produced a gun and raised it toward the deputy. The deputy fired and struck the man.
The deputy called for immediate medical response and attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one else was injured in the incident. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave, as per departmental policy. A Spokane Investigative Regional Response team has taken over the investigation.
