Gonzaga one of five finalists for Albany grad transfer Joe Cremo
Gonzaga is in the mix for Albany graduate transfer Joe Cremo, a versatile 6-foot-4 guard.
Cremo, a two-year starter, trimmed his list to Gonzaga, Creighton, Oregon, Texas and Penn State, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. He’s expected to visit Creighton this weekend.
“I’m just trying to figure out the best place that fits me and then taking it one day at a time,” Cremo told 247sports.com last week. “I know nothing is guaranteed but just the chance of having a big role on a team that is going to compete in the NCAA Tournament and then hopefully set myself for a chance to play after.”
The Zags are expected to return point guard Josh Perkins, wings Zach Norvell Jr. and Corey Kispert, guards Jesse Wade and Joel Ayayi, and incoming freshman Greg Foster Jr. Cremo could add experience as well as perimeter shooting and play-making ability.
Cremo averaged 17.8 points and 3.8 assists as a junior while earning first-team All-America East Conference honors. He shot 46 percent from the field and the 3-point line.
Cremo, who is from Scotia, New York, averaged 15.8 points, a career-high 5.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists as a sophomore. His 1,241 minutes (35.5 per game) established a school record and his 86.9 free-throw percentage ranked fourth on the Great Danes’ single-season list.
Cremo averaged 10.5 points in 20.7 minutes as a freshman and was named AEC rookie and sixth man of the year. He’s made 42 percent of his career 3s and 85 percent at the free-throw line.
He received interest from at least 15 schools, including Arizona, Cincinnati, Louisville, Ohio State, Texas Tech, Marquette, UConn, West Virginia and Wichita State.
