Vestal’s bread inspiriing

First of all, I love bread. That said, I greatly enjoyed and was inspired by Shawn Vestal’s article in Food section (Sept. 6). He wrote of his passion for baking bread, specifically sourdough. He has inspired me to put a few bread baking supplies on my gift wish list.

More than that, however, I was struck by his paragraph on bread being the “staff of life.” He wrote, “Bread is bigger than mere food, after all - we often speak of it as if it were food itself. THE food. We break it when we eat with others. Our stomachs are baskets for it. It’s the staff of life, a divine symbol, a sign of civilization. When we earn money, we WIN BREAD.”

This caused me to reflect on some biblical quotes from someone else who had some pretty profound things to say about bread. In “The Lord’s Prayer,” he teaches us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” In the Gospel of John, Chapter 6, the words “bread” and “loaves” are used a total of 21 times. Read it yourselves!

Thank you, Shawn, for the inspiration. You made my day!
