100 years ago in Spokane: Bare-kneed ‘Follies’ raise temperature at the Pantages

 (Spokesman-Review archives)

What was the main attraction of the Follies de Vogue musical extravaganza at the Pantages Theater?

Bare knees.

This musical revue featured “bare knees, a half dozen comely girls, two leading women, one lone man and a collection of catchy songs.”

Some quick costume changes and scenery changes transported viewers from a winter scene to Waikiki.

A reviewer noted that “Anna May Bell, in her silly cross-eyed dance, is clever.”

From the war beat: The world war had an obvious effect on enrollment at Washington State College (now Washington State University).

The registrar reported that an even 100 students had been lost to the draft, with more to come. In addition, 29 students enrolled in the officers’ reserve training camp, and at least 11 of them were to receive commissions.

“Under the existing conditions, it is hardly to be expected that the enrollment this fall will reach the figures of last year,” said the registrar.
