Mets captain David Wright will have rotator cuff surgery
The New York Mets announced on Monday morning that David Wright will have surgery to repair his right rotator cuff Tuesday in New York.
Wright’s latest comeback attempt ended last Monday, when the Mets announced that shoulder pain has ended his minor league rehab assignment. Wright, 34, released a statement last Monday saying he had his shoulder checked by a doctor.
“After playing in a few games, I continued to have shoulder pain,” Wright said. “So I decided to go to the doctor and get it checked out. Will make any decisions going forward after my appointment.”
Wright’s quest to return ended after three rehab games with Class-A Port St. Lucie. He went 1 for 10 and played two games at third, his first action in the field since May 2016. Wright has played only 75 major-league games since 2015.
Wright has dealt with spinal stenosis and the lingering impact of major neck surgery over the past few years.
The Mets also announced other injury updates on Monday morning:
-Michael Conforto will have surgery this week in Los Angeles to repair a tear in the posterior capsule in his left shoulder.
-T.J. Rivera will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow this week.
-Josh Edgin will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday in New York.
-Noah Syndergaard, who made his first rehab start on Saturday, will pitch again on Thursday for Brooklyn.
-Wilmer Flores suffered a broken nose Saturday in the night game at Houston and will be re-examined on Tuesday.
-Amed Rosario sustained a contusion of his right index finger in Saturday’s second game against the Astros. He is day-to-day.
