Area roundup: Washington State’s Chandler Teigen places ninth at Pac-12 cross country

Washington State junior Chandler Teigen placed ninth and Washington senior Andrew Gardner (Mead High) finished 11th Friday at the men’s Pac-12 Conference Cross Country Championships in Springfield, Oregon.

Teigen completed the 8,000-meter layout at Springfield Golf Course in 24 minutes, 2.3 seconds. Gardner, the second Husky finisher, crossed in 24:04.5.

Junior Grant Fisher (23:44.9) won the race and led Stanford (41 points) to the team title. Runner-up Joe Klecker, a sophomore, ran 23:48.0 to guide Colorado (47) to second place. Colorado was the six-time defending champion.

Washington (114) placed fifth, followed by WSU (138).

In the women’s race, WSU junior Vallery Korir (19:19.6 for 6,000 meters) placed 13th.

Junior Dani Jones (18:57.3) edged Oregon sophomore Katie Rainsberger (18:58.5) for the individual title and led Colorado (53) to its third consecutive team title.

Oregon and Stanford both scored 71, but Oregon won the tiebreaker. WSU (259) placed 10th.

  • Gonzaga’s men placed fourth and its women finished fifth at the West Coast Conference Championships on the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, California. The men scored 100 points to trail champion Brigham Young (15), Portland (58) and San Francisco (75). Max Kaderabek (24:21.1 for 8,000 meters) led Gonzaga, placing 17th. Connor McMillan won in 23:22.8 to lead BYU’s sweep of the top five spots. GU’s women scored 166 points, led by Jordan Thurston, who placed 18th in 20:52.9. Individual champion Charlotte Taylor (19:10.5) guided San Francisco (20 points) to the team title.

Volleyball

Taylor Mims finished with 21 kills and 11 digs and host Washington State (14-9, 3-8 Pac-12) took down UCLA 16-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 15-2.

Casey Schoenlein added 15 kills and Penny Tusa 27 assists and 10 digs for the Cougars. The Bruins dropped to 13-7, 6-5.

  • Carly DeHoog led five players in double-figure kills with 19 and host Washington (17-5, 7-4 Pac-12) outlasted 19th-ranked USC 25-19, 16-25, 22-25, 32-30, 15-12. Courtney Schwan added 14 kills and 12 digs for the 14th-ranked Huskies. The Trojans dropped to 15-7, 7-4.
  • Emiko Kahler had a team-high eight kills and Cara Wonsley added four aces to lead Whitworth (13-9, 10-3 Northwest Conference) to a 25-11, 25-23, 25-18 win over visiting Lewis & Clark (2-18, 1-12). Wonsley also closed out the key second game with a kill after the Pioneers closed within one point. Gracie Meiners added 24 assists and Taylor Wicht had 13 digs for the Pirates.
  • Taylor Gould and Joelle Mahoward combined for 20 kills to carry Community Colleges of Spokane (30-8, 9-4 Northwest Athletic Conference) to a 25-18, 25-23, 25-14 win over host Big Bend (1-29, 0-14) in Moses Lake. Alisha Straw added four aces and 13 digs for the Sasquatch, who ran their winning streak to five. Kaitlin Ramsey added 18 digs and Pua Kaaloa had 14.
  • Ocean Bryan and Lindsey Carpenter combined for 23 kills as host Walla Walla (28-15, 9-4 Northwest Athletic Conference) knocked North Idaho (27-6, 11-1) out of first place in the East Region with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-16 sweep. Hailee Etter had eight kills and 16 assists for the Cardinals, who fell behind Columbia Basin (12-1), which has won nine consecutive matches since losing to NIC on Oct. 6.

Women’s soccer

Anna Rose Wiencek scored on a sliding kick into the corner in the 49 minute to snap a tie and lead host Idaho (8-9-2, 4-5-1 Big Sky) to a 2-1 win over Eastern Washington (14-5-1, 8-1-1) in a regular-season finale in Moscow.

The Eagles tied the match at 1 in the 34th minute on Saige Lyons’ goal off a long pass from Allison Raniere. EWU, which had 10 wins and one tie since its last setback, will host the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed starting Wednesday.

The win pushed Idaho to 13 points, good enough to tie for fifth in the Big Sky standings. Because of tiebreakers, the Vandals narrowly missed out on the postseason as the No. 7 seed.

Men’s soccer

Sean Bowman and Tawwab Emiola scored during the final 8 minutes to give visiting San Francisco (5-8, 2-1 West Coast Conference) a 3-1 victory over Gonzaga (6-7-1, 0-4).

The Bulldogs tied the match at 1 at 75 minutes when Nick Ulowetz stole the ball and fed Sam Olson for his third goal of the season.

  • Senior Tyler Pangia scored off a rebound from a corner kick in the seventh minute of overtime to give Whitworth (9-7-1, 7-4-1 NWC) a 2-1 win over George Fox (4-13-1, 2-9-1) in Newberg, Oregon. The Pirates forced OT on senior Jonah Snyder’s seventh goal of the season, unassisted at 88:51. The Bruins played most of the game with 10 men.
