John Jakus leaving Gonzaga’s staff to become assistant coach at Baylor

John Jakus wasn’t necessarily looking for a job and he didn’t even have a resume. Turns out he didn’t need one.

Jakus worked two years at Baylor prior to arriving at Gonzaga as director of operations. When assistant coach Paul Mills left Baylor’s staff to become head coach at Oral Roberts, Bears head coach Scott Drew phoned Gonzaga’s Mark Few to inquire about Jakus.

“It’s bittersweet,” said Jakus, who spent three seasons at Gonzaga. “I was going to buy a house, we were really happy. Scott called Mark and it kind of fell into place.

“I want to coach again. I guess that time was going to come some day, it happened to come a little sooner than I thought.”

Jakus handled Gonzaga’s analytics, crunching the numbers to provide post-game reports and scouting information on the upcoming opponent.

Jakus was a special assistant in his previous stint at Baylor, similar to the title Ken Bone last year and Doug Wojcik two seasons ago have had at Gonzaga.

“I had been coaching overseas and my son was diagnosed with autism and Scott kind of saved my career (when Jakus returned to the U.S.),” Jakus said. “And that led to us coming to Gonzaga, so it’s kind of coming full circle.”

Jakus will continue working with analytics at Baylor but the assistant coaching position allows him to have on-court duties, recruiting and other responsibilities.
