Mariners Pregame: Robinson Cano to disabled list, lineups and starters

The Seattle Mariners (18-21) host the Oakland Athletics (16-22) in the second of a three-game series at 7:10 p.m. at Safeco Field.

The M’s snapped a four-game losing streak on Monday, beating the A’s 6-5.

But as has been the case most of this season with the M’s, it was one step forward, two back as the team placed 2B Robinson Cano on the 10-day disabled list, retro to Saturday, with a right quad strain.

The M’s recalled outfielder Boog Powell to take Cano’s roster spot.

Cano originally appeared to hurt the leg on May 9 against Philadelphia when he pulled up lame legging out a double in a 4-3 win. He played the next day and had one of his best offensive performances of the season: 4 for 6, home run, three RBIs. He hasn’t played since.

Cano is hitting .296/.362/.533 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 152 plate appearances.

  • Seattle is 11-5 (.688) at Safeco Field this season, having won four straight series here after losing the season-opening set against Houston…Seattle has the third-best home winning percentage in the American League behind Baltimore (13-3, .813) and Houston (14-6, .700).
  • Nelson Cruz has reached base safely in 15 of 16 games at home this season, including recording at least one hit in 14 games. Overall he is batting .344 (22 for 64) with seven runs scored, three doubles, three home runs, 13 RBI, and seven walks in 16 games at Safeco Field this season Among A.L. leaders at home this season, his .344 batting average currently ranks seventh (min. 50 PA).
  • Jean Segura has hit safely in 14 straight games, hitting .413 (26 for 63) with 14 runs, six doubles, one home run, five RBI. His 14-game hitting streak is the longest of his career, passing a 12-game streak from June 16-29, 2013 while with Milwaukee. Segura’s 14-game hitting streak is the second-longest by a Mariners player this season, trailing only Nelson Cruz’s 15-game hitting streak (4/19-5/6).

This Day in Mariners History

In 1993, Randy Johnson, trying for his second-career no-hitter, threw 8 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before Lance Blankenship blooped a single into right field. Johnson ended up with his second-career one-hitter and the win against Oakland snapped Seattle’s 16-game losing streak in the Coliseum.
