NHL Capsules: Happy B-Day, Hank! Lundqvist ties Fuhr for 10th on wins list

BOSTON – Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves on his 35th birthday and the New York Rangers got third-period goals from Pavel Buchnevich and Oscar Lindberg to beat the Boston Bruins 2-1 on Thursday night.

New York, which has beaten Boston five straight times, outscored the Bruins 12-5 while sweeping the three-game season series.

Lundqvist stymied the Bruins on several outstanding chances and improved to 25-12-2 against Boston with a 1.93 goals-against average. He earned his 403rd NHL win, tying Grant Fuhr for 10th on the career list.

Brad Marchand scored his team-leading 29th goal for the Bruins to cut it to 2-1 at 12:56 of the third. Boston lost for the second time in nine games.

Buchnevich was called up from the minors earlier in the day.

Canadiens 2, Predators 1

MONTREAL – Paul Byron scored the tiebreaking goal with nine seconds left and Montreal edged Nashville in P.K. Subban’s first game against the Canadiens since they traded him last summer.

Brendan Gallagher also scored and Carey Price made 24 saves as Montreal extended its winning streak to four games.

Ryan Ellis scored for the Predators, with an assist from Subban, before leaving with a lower-body injury. Pekka Rinne stopped 24 shots but Nashville had its four-game winning streak snapped.

The loss was Nashville’s first in regulation at Montreal since Jan. 15, 2009.

The Canadiens saluted Subban with a video montage before the puck was dropped. A teary-eyed Subban acknowledged the crowd during a long standing ovation.

Blue Jackets 1, Wild 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Brandon Saad scored in the third period and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 38 shots to lift Columbus over Minnesota.

Saad got his 19th goal of the season at 4:32 when he charged in to get his own rebound and poked it past Devan Dubnyk, who played an otherwise excellent game. Dubnyk made 39 saves for the Wild, who lost for the first time in three games.

Bobrovsky was every bit as outstanding for the Blue Jackets in the matchup of All-Star goalies, earning his fourth shutout this season and the 16th of his career.

Capitals 1, Devils 0

WASHINGTON – NHL-leading Washington won its franchise-record 14th consecutive home game, beating New Jersey thanks to rookie forward Jakub Vrana’s power-play goal with about 12 1/2 minutes left in the third period.

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby only needed to make 15 saves for his eighth shutout of the season. New Jersey’s previous season low for shots on goal was 17. New Jersey lost its fifth in a row.

Senators 2, Avalanche 1

OTTAWA, Ontario – Alex Burrows scored twice in his debut with Ottawa and led his new club to a win over Colorado.

Burrows was traded by the Vancouver Canucks to Ottawa on Monday for prospect Jonathan Dahlen. Burrows had played his previous 822 games with the Canucks.

Mike Hoffman had two assists for the Senators, while Craig Anderson had a relatively quiet night needing to make only 22 saves.

Rene Bourque scored for the Avalanche, who were kept in the game with a strong performance from Calvin Pickard who made 40 saves.

Flyers 2, Panthers 1, SO

PHILADELPHIA – Newly acquired Valtteri Filppula scored in regulation and Jakub Voracek and Jordan Weal netted goals in the shootout to lead Philadelphia over Florida.

Aaron Ekblad scored for the Panthers, who were trying to tie a franchise record with their sixth straight road victory. Florida has lost four of its past five.

Philadelphia won its second straight game to keep within close range of a playoff berth.

Weal opened the shootout by going high on James Reimer. Aleksander Barkov, Florida’s second shooter, tied it with a nifty move on Steve Mason. Voracek put Philadelphia ahead with a low shot past Reimer before Mason stopped Jonathan Huberdeau to secure the much-needed two points for Philadelphia.

Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo was trying to move into a tie with Curtis Joseph for fourth place all-time in wins, but Luongo left after making 13 saves in the first period because of a lower-body injury. Luongo has 453 victories.

Sabres 6, Coyotes 3

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Evander Kane scored the go-ahead goal with 5:36 remaining and Buffalo was finally able to preserve a third-period lead in a victory over Arizona.

Ryan O’Reilly had a goal and two assists, including a no-look backhand pass to set up Kane’s goal. Marcus Foligno scored twice and Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists to help Buffalo snap an 0-3-1 skid.

Robin Lehner finished with 19 saves during a game in which the Sabres outshot Arizona 31-10 through two periods and 41-22 overall. Sam Reinhart capped the scoring with an empty-netter.

Newly acquired forward Teemu Pulkkinen, Tobias Rieder and Alex Goligoski scored for the Coyotes, who lost for the fourth time in five games, and fourth straight on the road. Radim Vrbata had a career-best 10-game point streak end, and Mike Smith stopped 35 shots.

Islanders 5, Stars 4

DALLAS – Ryan Strome had a goal and two assists, and New York rallied with four straight goals to beat Dallas.

Strome scored the game’s first goal, then assisted on Andrew Ladd’s second-period goal and Dennis Seidenberg’s tiebreaker at 7:46 of the third.

The Islanders, in a tight race for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference, have won four of five and are 3-1 on a nine-game road trip. They were 7-13-4 on the road when the trip began.

Nick Leddy and Nikolay Kulemin also scored in the third for New York.

Stars captain Jamie Benn scored on the power play in the first period and short-handed in the third. Radek Faksa and Jason Spezza had second-period goals that gave Dallas a 3-1 lead.

Thomas Greiss made 22 saves for New York, while Antti Niemi stopped 28 shots for Dallas.

Kings 3, Maple Leafs 2, SO

LOS ANGELES – Kings captain Anze Kopitar snapped a 13-game goal drought in regulation and scored again in the shootout, leading Los Angeles back from a two-goal deficit in the third period for a victory over Toronto.

Kopitar and Tanner Pearson scored early in the third to tie it for the Kings, who opened a seven-game homestand with a key win for their playoff hopes.

Jonathan Quick stopped 29 shots and denied all three Maple Leafs players in the shootout, propelling Los Angeles to its first shootout victory in four tries since Oct. 22.

Tyler Bozak and Nikita Zaitsev scored early goals for the Maple Leafs, losers of four straight. Toronto also fell to 1-8 in shootouts this season.

Jarome Iginla played nearly 16 minutes in his debut with the Kings, who acquired the 39-year-old veteran from Colorado at the trade deadline on Wednesday.

Frederik Andersen made 33 saves in his first trip back to Southern California since the Anaheim Ducks traded him to Toronto in the offseason.

Sharks 3, Canucks 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Marcus Sorensen snapped a second-period tie with his first NHL goal, and San Jose beat Vancouver to end a six-game home losing streak to its Pacific Division rival.

Mikkel Boedker and Logan Couture also scored for the Sharks, who have won four of five overall and earned at least one point in eight straight games.

Bo Horvat scored for the Canucks, who have lost three in a row and five of six.

Aaron Dell made 17 saves to improve to 8-3-1 this season. Ryan Miller stopped 29 shots for the Canucks.

The road team had won the previous 12 games between the teams.
