‘Meet the Makers’ documentary series puts spotlight on Spokane creators

Putting the spotlight on creators who are shaped by and shaping Spokane, Spokane Arts will release the second film in its “Meet the Makers” short documentary series Thursday.

Episode two of the series, which is filmed and directed by the Spokane Film Project, features pop-rock band Friends of Mine.

In “Meet the Makers,” the trio of Eliza Johnson, Chris Malsam and Miles Martin talk about their introductions to art, the close-knit community within Spokane’s music scene, the pros of living in Spokane as an aspiring musician, the perks of all-ages music venues and what makes a good song.

“These stories highlighting local artists from diverse disciplines are a powerful way to engage the public and to connect artists with the communities they impact,” Spokane Arts Executive Director Melissa Huggins said in a press release. “We believe that seeing these artists up close, hearing their unique voices and stories, and understanding their lasting cultural impacts will spark further appreciation of our artists as local treasures and inspire a deeper enjoyment of local art.”

Spokane Arts will produce four films each year, which will be shared on social media, with Community Minded Television and at the Create Spokane Arts Awards. To watch “Meet the Makers” (Sculptor and artist Harold Balazs was featured in Episode 1.), visit spokanearts.org.
