Area college basketball: WSU women use late 10-1 run to slip past Boise State

Louise Brown notched a double-double, Borislava Hristova just missed one and the Washington State Cougars hit 6 of 6 free throws in the final 20 seconds to hold off the Boise State Broncos 61-53 in nonconference women’s basketball action on Monday night in Boise.

Brown finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Hristova added 13 points and nine boards for the Cougars (6-5), who missed their first 10 shots from the floor to open the game and trailed 14-10 after the first period. Alexys Swedlund had 11 points off the bench, but the Cougars’ three leading scorers made just 11 of 35 shots from the floor.

Lewis and Clark High graduate Riley Lupfer buried a 3-pointer with 3:34 left in the fourth quarter to give Boise State (5-4) a 52-51 lead. But Maria Kostourkova and Hristova scored back-to-back layups and the Cougars hit their free throws down the stretch to finish the game on a 10-1 run.

A’Shanti Coleman and Shalen Shaw topped Boise State with 13 points. Lupfer finished with nine points and six rebounds.

Arizona State 77, Idaho 33: Reserve Jamie Ruden scored 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting and the Sun Devils (9-3) romped to a nonconference win over the visiting Vandals (3-8).

Taylor Pierce led Idaho with eight points, but she made just 2 of 12 shots from the floor.

Saint Mary’s 76, Eastern Washington 56: Sydney Raggio had 13 points and 14 rebounds and all five Gaels starters scored in double figures en route to a nonconference win over the Eagles (4-7).

Stella Beck topped Saint Mary’s (7-3) with 16 points, Jasmine Forcadilla scored 15 and Madeline Holland and Megan McKay added 10 points apiece.

Delaney Hodgins paced the Eagles with 21 points and six rebounds, while Symone Starks chipped in with 12 points and five assists.

Saint Mary’s outrebounded Eastern 47-31. The Gaels (7-3) had a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint.

Howard Payne 78, Whitworth 75: Jada Evans came off the bench to score a career-high 28 points and the Yellow Jackets (7-5) edged the Pirates (6-4) in nonconference play in Tyler, Texas.

Evans connected on 11 of 19 shots from the floor for Howard Payne, which outscored Whitworth 45-30 after intermission.

Madison Moffat totaled a double-double – 21 points and 12 rebounds – to pace the Pirates, while Grace Douglas scored 16.

Whitworth turned the ball over 29 times – including seven each by Moffat and Camy Aguinaldo – to offset a 54 percent (29 of 54) shooting night from the floor. The Pirates had a 37-26 rebound advantage, but 12 of the Yellow Jackets’ rebounds were on the offensive end and allowed them to get off 15 more shots than Whitworth.

Men’s basketball

RayQuan Evans poured in 29 points and snagged 14 rebounds to power the North Idaho Cardinals to an 84-67 win over the Shoreline Dolphins at an NWAC crossover tournament in Moscow.

The Cardinals (6-3) got 17 points from Jarod Greene on 8-of-11 shooting and picked up their third straight win. Tyler Brimhall contributed 14 points and eight boards.

Terrell Brown Jr. topped the Dolphins (4-5) with 28 points, six rebounds and five assists.

NIC will play Highline today at 2 p.m.

Gonzaga junior Zykera Rice was named the WCC player of the week after scoring a career-high 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds in just 24 minutes of play.
