Education notebook: Mead/Mt. Spokane golf coach honored at invitational
Mt. Spokane High School golf students honored a beloved golf coach at the first annual Eleen Northcutt Invitational on Friday. Northcutt, a former girl’s golf coach for Mt. Spokane and Mead for over 25 years, died Jan. 31 from cancer. The invitational was renamed in her honor from its original title, the Big East. Held at the Wandemere Golf Course, the Mt. Spokane team of Megan Billeter, Brooke Fraser, Kailyn Jones and Chloe Lavelle played 18 holes and finished third out of 24 teams. It had a combined score of 254.
11 schools given state
achievement awards
Eleven Spokane County schools out of 280 selected statewide were recently presented the Washington Achievement Award for 2016. The area schools and their field of achievement are:
Central Valley School District: Liberty Lake Elementary School (high progress);
Mead School District: Colbert Elementary (math growth) and Prairie View Elementary (closing the achievement gap for students with disabilities).
Medical Lake SD: Medical Lake Middle (closing the achievement gap for Hispanic students);
Spokane Public Schools: Balboa Elementary (closing the achievement gap for students with disabilities), Hutton Elementary (high progress), Moran Prairie Elementary (high progress) and Wilson Elementary (high progress, special recognition math growth, special recognition ELA growth);
West Valley SD: Seth Woodard Elementary (closing the achievement gap for students with disabilities), Spokane Valley High (overall excellence) and West Valley High (overall excellence and extended graduation rate).
St. George’s seniors
awarded scholarships
St. George’s School seniors Brooke Martin and Max McGougan recently received competitive scholarships to help fund their college careers. Martin is one of 15 recipients nationwide to be awarded the Bryan Cameron Impact Scholarship, which includes a full ride and a four-year scholarship to the school of her choice. McGougan received one of only two Marsden Scholarships, in the amount of $7,500 and renewable for four years, funded by the Episcopal Diocese for students from across the Inland Northwest.
Medical lake robotics
team competes in Texas
Medical Lake High School Circuit Breakers robotics team competed last weekend at the World Robotics Competition in Houston, Texas. Held at Minute Maid Stadium, 400 teams from all over the world competed in this event. The Circuit Breakers advanced from general qualifications into the quarterfinals. It was one of six teams to receive its division’s Excellence in Engineering Award.
Northwest Christian
to hold annual auction
Northwest Christian Schools will hold their 24th annual auction. Hosted by Northwest Christian Upper Campus Activity Center, the auction will be Saturday at 5 p.m. The evening includes a silent auction, buffet dinner and live auction. Reservations are required and admission is $40 per person. Tickets can be purchased online at nwcs.org/auction.
Kaplicky voted Middle
School Principal of Year
Mr. Doug Kaplicky of East Valley Middle School was voted 2017 Washington State Middle School Principal of the Year. He was recognized at a reception April 19 at the school.
