Area roundup: Idaho’s Michelle Kim places ninth in Mexico golf

Michelle Kim was a model of consistency at the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico with three rounds of 73 to finish at 219 and in a tie for ninth on Tuesday in the Idaho Vandals’ final competition before the Big Sky Conference tournament.

Sophie Hausmann was one stroke back at 220 and in a tie for 12th after rounds of 74-75-71.

Also for the Vandals, Amy Hasenoehrl tied for 54th (235), Clara Moyano tied for 63rd (237) and Danika Palm was 77th (249).

CSU Fullerton’s Martina Edberg won at 2-under 214 and Washington won the team competition at 9-over 873, edging UT San Antonio by one stroke. Idaho finished tied for 12th in the 14-team event.

Volleyball

Washington State’s McKenna Woodford is one of 12 players chosen for the U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Volleyball Team-Thailand Tour roster competing this summer, USA Volleyball announced on Monday.

Woodford, a rising junior, will train and compete May 19-30. The CNT-Thailand match schedule will include contests against the Thailand National Team, the Thailand U23 Team and Bangkok Glass, the top team in the Thai professional league.

Women’s tennis

Gonzaga’s Sophie Whittle was named West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week after a strong return to the top spot of the lineup.

Whittle won both her matches in two sets last weekend, downing San Diego’s Nicole Anderson 6-3, 6-0, and beating BYU’s Savannah Ware-Avina 6-2, 6-0. Those matches were her first at the No. 1 singles position since Feb. 11, and she is now undefeated atop the singles lineup at 5-0. The two wins also put her at 8-2 overall in dual play.

Whittle is the third Zag to earn the conference’s Singles Player of the Week award. Whittle also was part of last week’s Doubles Pair of the Week with teammate Graciela Rosas.

Area golf

Originally slated to open on Friday, Circling Raven announced that due to conditions after an inspection of the course, the opening will be delayed until April 14.
