Washington, Idaho politicians standing by their candidates post-debate
Washington and Idaho congressional and party leaders split down party lines in their impressions of Monday’s first presidential debate. Their impressions:
Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho: “Two different visions for America were on display tonight. One, represented by Hillary Clinton, focused on higher taxes, more spending and more government control over the economy. The other, represented by Donald Trump, called for more limited government, lower taxes, and a free market economy. Americans have a tremendously important decision to make in this election.”
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.: “If anyone had any doubts about this presidential election before, or was frustrated and considering sitting on the sidelines, I’m just hoping they were watching this debate. Donald Trump once again made it clear that he would be a dangerous and divisive president who would devastate our economy and turn back the clock on so many issues that Washington state families hold dear. And Hillary once again demonstrated her deep understanding of the issues Washington state families face and her commitment to fighting for our priorities and an economy that works for all families, not just the wealthiest few.”
Steve Yates, Idaho Republican Party chairman: “Tonight’s debate illustrated the importance of electing Donald Trump as our next commander in chief. While he focused on what was best for the American people, Hillary Clinton focused on personal attacks against Donald Trump and shifting the blame away from herself. Issues such as immigration, the economy, and foreign policy will define our country in the next four years, and it is clear that on these issues, Hillary Clinton has, and will, fail the American people.”
Jaxon Ravens, Washington Democratic Party chairman: “Hillary Clinton proved tonight that the choice in this election is clear. We can stand stronger together or we can let Donald Trump tear us apart with his divisive rhetoric and dangerous ideas. Donald Trump’s xenophobic, Islamophobic and downright scary campaign has no place in Washington state. It’s stunning and disturbing that Washington State Republican Party Chair Susan Hutchison and her party are still boasting about their support for Donald Trump.”
