Occupants narrowly escape north Spokane house fire; four dogs die

Two people jumped from the second story of a north Spokane house to escape a fire early Sunday morning. Four dogs died in the blaze, the Spokane Fire Department said.

Crews responded at 1:24 a.m. to the fire in the 2300 block of East Everett Avenue in the Hillyard neighborhood. They quickly extinguished the fire burning in a staircase and second-floor room, preventing it from spreading.

One of the occupants received minor injuries after jumping out of the home and was treated at a local hospital.

The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service helped with the recovery of two dogs who escaped the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the department’s Special Investigation Unit.
