Deer Park defense shuts down Rogers 23-0 at Albi Stadium

The Deer Park Stags started quickly and continually shut down the Rogers offense en route to an impressive 23-0 shutout of the Greater Spokane League 3A team to start the 2016 season Friday.

While the defense shut down the Pirates, Tyson Lim ran for 141 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns to carry his team to a victory.

“I’m really proud of our defense,” Deer Park coach Keith Stamps said. “But that hit by Weston Dean was the turning point in the game. We took control from there.”

After Conner O’Dea hit Treyton Bird on a 30-yard pass to the Rogers 2-yard-line, Lim punched it into the end zone on the next play to give Deer Park a 7-0 lead with 4:36 remaining in the first half.

On the ensuing kickoff, Dean crushed Rogers return man Shelmar Teasley, causing a fumble that Ethan Newman recovered on the Pirates 25.

Five plays later, Deer Park’s O’Dea ran it in from 3 yards out and the game was essentially out of reach.

The closest Rogers got to scoring was a failed 35-yard field-goal attempt early in the second quarter.

Rogers’ Eric McKay rumbled for 89 yards on 13 carries. He also had four catches for 42 yards, but the Pirates failed to sustain any drives.

Rogers quarterback Zac Phillips was 12 for 22 for 103 yards and an interception.

The Stags forced six punts and held Rogers to 0 for 9 on third-down conversions.

“I’m really proud of our effort,” Stamps said.
