THEZONE receives grant

to provide access to food

The Smith-Barbieri Progressive Fund has given an $85,000 grant to fund two projects in THEZONE, with which Spokane Public Schools is a partner, to provide access to healthy and affordable food.

THEZONE Mobile Market will work with local grocers, farmers and Second Harvest to deliver food that will be sold at or below market prices to high density, low-income housing complexes.

Green Schoolyards will create gardens and greenhouses in schools to grow fresh food for school kitchens. Staff, students and community members will learn about gardening, food prep and nutrition.

These gardens will also provide summer employment opportunities for students through a partnership with Project Hope.

Both programs will launch next spring.
