Stream on Demand: Acclaimed ‘Boyhood’ comes to Netflix

What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming services.

Pay-Per-View / Video-On-Demand

Kubo and the Two Strings,” an animated film from Portland’s Laika Entertainment, is a family-friendly tale with mythic themes, lovely imagery, and a touching story. Features the voices of Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey (PG). Also on DVD and Blu-ray.

Jeff Bridges is the Texas Ranger chasing bank robbers Chris Pine and Ben Foster in Hell or High Water,” an American outlaw drama in the modern world of mortgage foreclosure. (R). Also on DVD and Blu-ray.

Also new: “War Dogs” with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller as real-life private munitions brokers in over their heads (R), the boxing drama Hands of Stone with Robert De Niro and Edgar Ramirez (R) and the action sequel “Mechanic: Resurrection” with Jason Statham and Jessica Alba (R).

Available same day as select theaters nationwide is the science fiction thriller Evolution from France (not rated, with subtitles).

Netflix

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life picks up with Lorelai (Lauren Graham), Rory (Alexis Bledel) and the rest of the folks of Stars Hollow in four feature-length films across the four seasons. Netflix also has all 153 episodes of the original series, which ended in 2007.

Richard Linklater’s Boyhood (2014, R) dramatizes the life of one boy (played by Ellar Coltrane) as he grows up in a film shot over twelve years. It won an Oscar and three Golden Globe awards.

The Brazilian science-fiction thriller 3%: Season 1is set in a devastated future where the impoverished compete to go to “the better side.” Eight episodes, in Portuguese with English subtitles.

Amazon Prime Video

The Grand Tour,” a new automotive series featuring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, the former stars of “Top Gear,” is now running as a weekly series. New episodes every Friday on Amazon Prime.

Also new is the animated adventure series for kids Thunderbirds Are Go: Season 2.”

Amazon Prime and Hulu

Creed (2015) passes the gloves to the next generation, with Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed and Stallone playing mentor and father figure as Rocky Balboa (PG-13).

HBO Now

True sports stories: the historical drama Race (2016) with Stephan James as Olympic track champion Jesse Owens (PG-13) and the ski jump comedy Eddie the Eagle (2016) with Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman (PG-13).

Marathon: The Patriots Day Bombing is an HBO original documentary on the terrorist attack in Boston (not rated).
