Driver dies in crash into Sacred Heart parking garage

Spokane firefighters walk past a fatal car accident at Seventh Avenue and Division Street Thursday afternoon. The single occupant-driven Mazda Protege was heading east on Seventh when it failed to turn left onto Division. A driver was killed Thursday afternoon in a crash into a parking garage at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

The Mazda sedan was headed eastbound on Seventh Avenue adjacent to the hospital and Cowley Park when it continued and did not stop at the T-bone intersection at Division Street, said Spokane Police spokesman Josh Laiva. Witnesses who saw the crash said the car accelerated before leaving the roadway, a police news release says.

The car went over the curb and through a first-floor opening of the garage. It came to rest partially hanging out of the garage.

The driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was the only person in the car at the time, Laiva said. No one was injured in the garage.

The crash is under investigation.

Division Street was closed for several hours between 6th and 7th Avenue.
