State golf roundup: Davenport sweeps 2B/1B individual titles

Davenport sophomore Kaysa Panke and junior Palmer Guhlke captured individual titles Wednesday at the State 2B/1B golf tournaments.

Panke, who returned to the golf course earlier this month after recovering from a torn ACL, shot a 79 at MeadowWood for a two-day total of 156, eight strokes ahead of Pomeroy’s Deana Caruso. Wilbur-Creston’s Alicia Johnson (82-167) was third.

“I believe my short game and my putting were what saved me,” Panke said. “I had a shortened (golf) season because of my knee injury so this kind of surprised me.”

Northwest Christian, led by fifth-place Hannah Allen (88-173) won the team title with 20 points, edging Pomeroy (19).

Guhlke, who was battling the flu, shot a 73 (147), four strokes in front of Ilwaco’s Blake Kukula.

“Last night and this morning I had a temperature and could hardly talk or hear,” Guhlke said. “I definitely feel better (than Tuesday), still not 100 percent but winning makes it a little better.”

Guhlke trailed by three shots entering the final round but caught up quickly with an even-par front and a birdie on No.10. He was 2-under before a double bogey on No. 16.

Ilwaco won the boys’ championship.

Kelly Hooper finished tied for 10th – her fourth top 10 state finish – Jordan Jaeger tied for 17th and Hannah Rieckers placed 40th, helping Gonzaga Prep take sixth place.

Hooper fired a 76 at Sun Willows in Pasco for a two-day total of 154. Jaeger shot an 80 (157) and Rieckers shot a 95 (177). Lewis and Clark’s Skylar Kersten (83-164) finished 31st. University’s Courtney Jackson (88-168) was 39th.

Bellarmine Prep rolled to its seventh consecutive team title. Pasco’s Jalayne Martinez (73-142) won the individual title.

Gonzaga Prep’s Patrick Parelius (82-158) finished tied for 26th at Meadow Springs in Richland. Central Valley’s Riley Hadley (83-163) and Isaac Emerson (84-164) finished 36th and 37th, respectively.

Bellarmine Prep repeated as boys’ champions. Richland’s Carl Underwood (73-145) won a playoff to claim the individual title.

Cheney’s Cheyenne Marchand followed up Tuesday’s 80 with a 79 at Columbia Point in Richland to take fourth place. Grace Frazier (80-166) tied for eighth to lead Clarkston to a fifth-place finish. Morgan Baum (69-147) was the individual champion and helped East Valley of Yakima capture the team title.

Liberty of Issaquah won the boys’ championship. Bellingham’s Nick Nolan (70-145) earned the individual title.
