Pirates start slow at D-III golf tourney
The Whitworth Pirates found themselves in 22nd place Tuesday after the opening round of the NCAA Division III men’s golf tournament at Mendon Golf Course in Rochester, New York.
The Pirates sit at 25-over-par 309, four strokes out of the final qualifying spot to make the cut for the third and fourth rounds.
Andrew Dodge paced the Pirates with a 5-over 76.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps leads the team race by 11 strokes. Kethan Roddy of CMS has a two-shot lead over teammate Alex Wrenn in the individual race.
Track and field
Nicholas Gosselin and Tyler Blakely both won two events at the Sasquatch Carnival at Spokane Falls Community College.
Gosselin of Whitworth won the 200 (21.96 seconds) and 400 (48.78) sprints, while CC Spokane’s Blakely was first in the high jump (6 feet, 10 3/4 inches) and long jump (22-5 3/4).
