Baseball roundup: Parker’s comeback ends in another broken elbow after just 12 pitches

Associated Press

Twelve pitches into his comeback attempt, Oakland’s Jarrod Parker broke his elbow once again.

The Athletics said Friday that an MRI showed the right-hander had broken the medial epicondyle in his right elbow.

The 27-year-old, selected by Arizona in the first round of the 2007 amateur draft, has not pitched in the major leagues since the 2013 A.L. Division Series.

He had Tommy John surgery on Oct. 28, 2009, and again on March 24, 2014. He first broke his elbow on May 8 last year while pitching for Triple-A Nashville during an injury rehabilitation assignment.

Parker has a 25-16 record in parts of three seasons and once went a team-record 19 straight games without a loss.

Freese, Pirates agree

Infielder David Freese and the Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract.

The 32-year-old, an All-Star with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012, hit .257 with 27 doubles, 14 homers and 56 RBIs last year with the Los Angeles Angels. He has a .276 career average with 68 homers and 348 RBIs for St. Louis (2009-13) and the Angels (2014-15).

Freese was MVP of the N.L. Championship Series and World Series in 2011, when he hit .397 with five homers and 21 RBIs during the postseason.

The Indians’ first 22 batters were retired before the fifth Colorado pitcher, Scott Oberg, walked Mike Napoli with one out in the eighth inning.
