Proposal with NFL concussion guidelines gets Idaho panel’s backing

Associated Press

BOISE – An Idaho legislative panel on Tuesday introduced legislation to comply with the NFL and the Center of Disease Control’s new guidelines on athletic concussions.

Mike Massey, an attorney for the St. Luke’s Health System, says the national organizations worked together to set the new guidelines after recent evidence suggested concussions suffered by athletes on the field had long-lasting impacts on health.

Massey says the Idaho proposal requires that the parents of high school and middle school students receive notification of their child’s concussion.

It also ensures that students resume their studies before taking the field after a concussion.

The House Health and Welfare Committee voted to introduce the measure unanimously. It will now face a full legislative hearing.
