State seeking input on Trent Avenue bridge replacement
The Washington Department of Transportation is seeking public input Wednesday on a replacement of the Trent Avenue bridge over the Spokane River just east of Hamilton Street.
Engineers want the public’s help in fine-tuning the design for a replacement of the 1910 bridge.
While construction is not expected until 2018, designers want to hear from the public on the types of features the bridge should include. Construction is expected to take two years.
The open house meeting will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Union Gospel Mission’s recovery center offices, 1306 E. Trent Ave.
DOT said the existing bridge remains safe for travel but is outdated. The bridge serves traffic on state Highway 290, which connects Spokane with North Idaho in the Rathdrum area. The highway runs parallel to BNSF Railway tracks.
A similar bridge over the Spokane River west of Hamilton Street in the University District was replaced 15 years ago.
Market Street work nears completion
A widening project on Market Street from Parksmith to Farwell roads is nearly complete.
Repaving on Thursday and Friday will be followed by installation of lane markers and other work this week.
The widening has created a center turn lane, bike lanes, new sidewalks and curbs, and a sanitary sewer line.
Mural to feature trash plant
City workers are getting ready for a new mural that will be painted on concrete structures at the north end of the Maple Street Bridge.
The mural will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the region’s garbage incinerator, also known as the Waste-to-Energy Plant.
Lanes will be reduced at the north end of the bridge on Wednesday so crews can paint an undercoat onto the structures in advance of the mural painting next month.

Also in Spokane, chip seal work is underway on Kathleen Avenue near Indian Trail Road, Rebecca Street near Upriver Drive and 33rd Avenue near Comstock Park.
Freya Street is closed from 37th Avenue to Palouse Highway for work on Hazel’s Creek stormwater facilities.

To the north, Monroe has two lanes open from Main to Second avenues following installation of new utilities.
Rowan Avenue from Alberta to Ash streets is closed for reconstruction.
Work is underway at Division Street and Main Avenue for sidewalk and utility improvements. The intersection work will be followed this summer by a project to create angle parking and a center median on Main from Browne to Division streets.
