State seeks to civilly commit Spokane sex offender

The state of Washington is trying to have a sex offender arrested in 1999 on multiple child sex charges in Spokane civilly committed as a sexually violent predator.

Donald R. Curbow, 59, was sentenced to 200 months in prison in 2000 after pleading guilty to first-degree rape of a child and first-degree child molestation. He was set to be released soon and the Attorney General’s office filed paperwork with the court to have him declared a sexually violent predator.

A judge ruled on June 7 that Curbow will be held in prison while the state’s petition moves forward, according to a news release from the attorney general’s office.

Curbow’s victim in Spokane was an 11-year-old boy. He was originally charged with six felony charges relating to child rape and possession of child pornography, plus a charge of voyeurism for an incident in the men’s bathroom in the STA Plaza, according to Spokesman-Review archives.

He was previously convicted of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse in Multnomah County, Oregon, in 1995 and served 18 months in prison.
