Boys basketball roundup: East Valley survives Cheney’s late charge
Dante Clayton scored 13 points and East Valley made enough free throws late in the game to survive Cheney’s rally in a 54-53 Great Northern League win Tuesday in Cheney.
The Blackhawks (4-4, 0-3) fell behind 49-39 after three quarters, but outscored the Knights 14-5 in the fourth to make things interesting.
Eli Holecek added 12 points for East Valley (6-4, 1-1). Cheney was led by Riley Jones and Jamiel Worthem, who scored 19 and 14, respectively.
Clarkston 62, West Valley 59 (OT): Trevon Allen poured in 35 points and the Bantams (8-0, 1-0) edged the host Eagles (7-3, 1-1). West Valley was led by Brennen Fulkins, who scored 20, and Johnny Sage, who had 19.
Inland Empire 5A
Coeur d’Alene 57, Lake City 54: Joey Naccarato had 17 points and six rebounds and Brody Lundblad chipped in 16 points as the Vikings (9-1, 1-0) held on late and beat the Timberwolves (2-8, 0-1) at Lake City. Nate Carlson had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Kenny Louie-McGee added 13 for Lake City, but the Timberwolves had 17 turnovers and squandered a couple of opportunities in the final minute.
Inland Empire 4A
Lakeland 49, Sandpoint 45: The Hawks (3-7, 2-0) used a 22-12 run to take control and beat the host Bulldogs (2-9, 0-1). Davan Norris led Sandpoint with 16 points.
Northeast A
Freeman 64, Newport 45: Ryan Maine hit five 3-pointers and scored 25 points to help send the Scotties (7-3, 3-1) past the host Grizzlies (6-3, 2-2). Michael Coumont added 12 points for Freeman, which put the game out of reach with a 28-11 third-quarter run. Koa Poncho led Newport with 20 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Lakeside 83, Riverside 48: Cameron Gay scored 21 points and Hunter Meyer added 16 as the Eagles (7-3, 3-1) routed the host Rams (0-7, 0-4). Lakeside’s 23-9 third-quarter run put the game out of reach for Riverside. The Rams’ Kory Cross scored 14.
Deer Park 57, Chewelah 54: Connor Markham scored 17 points and Dante Myers added 15 as the Stags (4-6, 3-1) got out to a quick start and held on late to beat the visiting Cougars (1-9, 0-4). Owen Baldwin led four Chewelah players in double figures with 19 points.
Northeast 2B
Liberty 49, Springdale 37: Keith Dumaw had 16 points and nine rebounds and Chase Burnham added 14 points and seven boards as the Lancers (11-0, 5-0) beat the visiting Chargers (8-3, 2-3). Springdale got 14 points from John Lynch, but the Chargers committed 17 turnovers and shot just 29 percent from the field.
Colfax 48, Davenport 33: Danny Robinson scored 20 points and Carson Cloaniger scored all seven of his points in the decisive second quarter as the Bulldogs (7-4) beat the visiting Gorillas (5-6). Davenport’s Jaden Flett and Nathan Hopkins scored 13 apiece.
St. George’s 71, Kettle Falls 25: Zac Steele made 6 of 9 3-pointers and scored 18 points to guide the Dragons (8-4, 3-2) past the visiting Bulldogs (2-7, 1-4). Liam Sienko added 12 points for St. George’s, which built a 43-10 halftime lead.
Nonleague
Moses Lake 73, Post Falls 56: Cesar Sandoval made 7 of 9 free throws and scored 28 points to power the Chiefs past the visiting Trojans (7-5). Zach Hillman led Post Falls with 19 points. Max McCullough, the Trojans’ usual high-scorer, was held to seven on just two field goals.
St. John-Endicott 42, Odessa-Harrington 40: Adam Blakeley had a steal and made a lay-in with 0.7 seconds left to send the Eagles (2-7) past the Titans (1-7) in St. John. Blakeley and Cooper Lundberg scored 12 points apiece and were key in helping St. John-Endicott erase a 10-point deficit in the final minute and a half. Odessa-Harrington’s Jayd Jennings led all scorers with 15.
Tekoa-Rosalia 51, Valley Christian 45: Kade Holling scored 14 points and Cooper Angelo chipped in 12 as the Timberwolves (2-9) took control in the second half and beat the Panthers (4-5) in Rosalia. Valley Christian’s Chase Strunk made five 3-pointers and scored 19 points.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 70, Pateros 27: Payton Nielsen led five players in double figures with 19 points and the Warriors (8-0) routed the Billygoats in Coulee City.
Wallace 56, Coeur d’Alene Charter 23: Hunter Gust scored 19 points and Justin Bayer added 15 as the Miners dumped the visiting Panthers.
