Prep girls roundup: Newport advances past Newport

Hadley Stratton scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Newport past Medical Lake 56-33 in a District 7 1A loser-out game Saturday in Newport.

The Grizzlies outscored the Cardinals 20-8 in the second quarter to go ahead by 16 at the half. Newport’s Stephanie Huang scored nine of her 11 points in the decisive second quarter.

Bradyn Wegner scored 12 for Medical Lake (6-16).

Newport (11-10) will play Freeman in the semifinals Tuesday at West Valley.

Chewelah 34, Riverside 32: Krislyn Koler, Jaelynn Skok and Kyrstan Miller scored eight points apiece and the Cougars (12-9) used a 9-0 third-quarter run to beat the host Rams (8-11) in a District 7 1A elimination game.

Riverside had some opportunites in the closing minutes, but couldn’t convert its free throws. The Rams’ Sierra Jackson scored 12.

Chewelah will play Lakeside in the semifinals Tuesday at West Valley.

5A

Borah 42, Post Falls 39: Alyssa Bolt scored 15, Michal Bilger added 13 and the Lions beat the Trojans (14-11) in a 5A State play-in game in Grangeville.

Post Falls was elminated.

3A

Emmett 82, Priest River 45: The Huskies earned a spot in the 3A State tournament with a win over the Spartans (14-9). Priest River was eliminated.

District 7 1B

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 56, Selkirk 25: Brenna Oliver scored 20 points and Berlyn Hunt added 10 as the Warriors (20-2) earned a spot in the title game with an easy win over the Rangers (14-7) in Deer Park.

Gabi Rick scored nine points for Selkirk, which will play in a loser-out game against Cusick Wednesday in Deer Park.

ACH will play Republic Saturday in Deer Park to determine the top two seeds to regionals.

Republic 50, Odessa-Harrington 23: Shania Graham had 10 points and six steals and the Tigers (21-1) routed the Titans (9-12) in a semifinal game in Deer Park.

Republic’s Carlie Rittel added nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks and Demi Jo Vaughn chipped in nine points and eight boards. Odessa-Harrington will play Valley Christian in a loser-out game Wednesday in Deer Park.

Cusick 64, Wellpinit 39: Brianna Balcom had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists and the Panthers (10-10) stayed alive with a win over the Redskins (8-12) in a loser-out game in Deer Park.

Cusick’s Jocelin Nenema scored 17, Racheal Wynne had 13 and Gracie Strangeowl chipped in 12. Wellpinit’s Christina Carden scored 12.

Valley Christian 66, Inchelium 17: Phoebe Trigsted had 14 points and five steals, Kendra Pope added 10 points and 11 rebounds and Hannah Fields chipped in 10 points and 10 boards as the Panthers (11-11) overwhelmed the Hornets (5-14) in an elimination game in Deer Park.

Valley Christian outscored Inchelium 17-0 in the second quarter.

Gymnastics

Kamiakin edged Mt. Spokane for the 3A regional title at the Mead/Mt. Spokane Gymnastic Center in Spokane.

Mt. Spokane’s Reigan Kampmann was the beam champion and Jade Anderson claimed the floor title. Kampmann was third place in all-around. She was second in floor and third on the vault.

Southridge’s Makaya Hui was first in all-around.

Next up is the state championships, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

Olympia claimed the team title at the 4A regional meet at Mt. Raineer High School. Mt. Raineer was second, Puyallup was third and Central Valley edged Mead for fourth place.

Central Valley’s McKinzie Carter led area competitors with a sixth-place finish in all-around. She was third in beam, fifth in floor and ninth in vault.

The state championships are Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.
