Mount Vernon police officer Mike McClaughry has made further improvements this week while at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said Mount Vernon police Lt. Chris Cammock.

Although McClaughry remains in intensive care, Cammock said doctors have removed McClaughry’s breathing tube and he is breathing on his own.

Some of the medical devices regulating pressure to McClaughry’s head have also been removed, Cammock said.

McClaughry, a 31-year veteran of the Mount Vernon Police Department, continues to recover after being shot in the head Dec. 15 while responding to a call in the 800 block of LaVenture Road.

Cammock said McClaughry’s wife Linda McClaughry has been upbeat and positive regarding the improvements this week.

“It felt really good to hear about that,” Cammock said.

The GoFundMe account established by the family to help pay for expenses has raised $41,785 toward a goal of $100,000, according to the account page.

The fund is also being used to help the family remain in Seattle while McClaughry is hospitalized.
