Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 1 UConn beats No. 12 Ohio St 82-63 for 85th straight win
Katie Lou Samuelson scored eight of her 26 points during a key third-quarter run, and No. 1 UConn beat 12th-ranked Ohio State 82-63 on Monday night in Hartford, Connecticut, for the Huskies’ 85th consecutive victory.
Napheesa Collier had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (10-0), who are five games away from matching their NCAA record 90-game winning streak set from 2008-10.
UConn led by six before opening the second half with a 15-7 spurt. Samuelson hit two 3-pointers during the run. The second made it 55-41.
The Huskies also switched up their defense on Ohio State star Kelsey Mitchell, holding her to four points in the second half after she had 19 at the break.
With Mitchell bottled up, the Buckeyes (9-4) couldn’t get within single digits.
(7) Florida State 95, North Florida 39: Leticia Romero scored 22 points, helping the Seminoles (11-1) to the runaway win over the Ospreys (6-7) in Tallahassee, Florida.
Florida State had six players score in double figures, led by Romero’s third 20-point game of her senior season. Ivey Slaughter and Imani Wright each scored 14 points for the Seminoles, which have won 10 straight games for the eighth time in school history.
A Claire Ioannidis 3-pointer gave North Florida a 3-2 lead before the Seminoles scored 14 straight points. Florida State led 52-17 at halftime.
Sierra Shepherd led the Ospreys with 12 points, and Ioannidis added 11.
(11) Miami 75, Coppin State 35: Adrienne Motley and Erykah Davenport scored 15 points apiece, and the Hurricanes (10-1) pulled away for the victory over the Eagles (0-9) in the Miami Holiday Tournament in Coral Gables, Florida.
Miami led 59-33 after three quarters and held Coppin State to one free throw at the 6:18 mark of the fourth and another with 34 seconds left.
Keena Samuels scored eight points for Coppin State, which is off to its worst start since the 2008-09 team also lost nine in a row.
Miami coaches wore holiday sweaters for the game.
(20) Oklahoma 81, Xavier 69: Peyton Little scored 19 points, Maddie Manning had 17 points and eight rebounds, and the Sooners (8-2) beat the Muskateers (7-2) in the Puerto Rico Classic in Las Vegas.
Sherri Coale earned her 450th career win as a collegiate head coach.
Vionise Pierre-Louis, T’ona Edwards and Nancy Mulkey scored 10 points apiece for Oklahoma.
Kindell Fincher scored 16 points for Xavier and Raeshaun Gaffney added 14 points.
The event is being played in Las Vegas because of concerns over the Zika virus in Puerto Rico.
Long Beach State 73, (21) South Florida 68: Madison Montgomery scored 19 points, and the 49ers (8-4) handed the Bulls (8-1) their first loss of the season in the Play4Kay Shootout in Las Vegas.
Montgomery hit 1 of 2 free throws with 32 seconds left and Gigi Hascheff put in the miss for a 70-65 lead.
USF’s leading scorer, Kitija Laksa, scored her first points of the fourth quarter when she hit a 3 with 16 seconds left. Jewelyn Sawyer made 1 of 2 free throws to give Long Beach State a three-point lead, and Laia Flores missed a 3 on the other end.
Hascheff and Raven Benton each scored 15 points for Long Beach State, which earned its fifth straight win.
Laksa led South Florida with 18 points. Maria Jespersen had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Flores added 17 points.
(25) Oregon State 62, Unlv 59: Sydney Wiese scored 25 points and the Beavers (8-1) scored the last seven points in a victory over the Rebels (8-2) in the Play4Kay Shootout.
Oregon State had 22 turnovers. Wiese made four 3-pointers and is two behind Candice Wiggins’ Pac-12 record of 295.
Dakota Gonzalez had 16 points for UNLV, which lost point guard Nikki Wheatley to a knee injury in the third quarter.
