Digest: Mancini leads Endwell, New York, to Little League title game

Little League: Michael Mancini led Endwell, New York, to the Little League World Series championship game Saturday, striking out 11 in a 4-2 victory over Goodlettsville, Tennessee, in the U.S. final in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The Mid-Atlantic champs will try to win their first title against international winner South Korea on Sunday. South Korea beat Panama 7-2 earlier Saturday in the international final.

Mancini allowed just one hit through 4 2/3 innings. Billy Dundon drove in two runs, and Jack Hopko and James Fellows each had an RBI. Jon Luke Simmons broke up Mancini’s no-hit bid in the top of the fifth.

Down to his team’s last out, Zach McWilliams gave Tennessee life with a two-run homer off Jude Abbadessa in the top of the sixth. McWilliams’ blast halved New York’s lead, but Abbadessa struck out Carson Rucker to end the game.

Choi leads South Korea: Youbin Choi struck out 14 and South Korea beat Panama 7-2 in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to reach the championship game of the Little League World Series.

Choi gave up six hits in six innings. Seum Kwon and Jaekyeong Kim hit two-run homers and Wontae Cho also homered for South Korea (4-0).

Sauers takes 2-stroke lead in Boeing Classic

Golf: Gene Sauers took the Boeing Classic lead, two weeks after his breakthrough victory in the U.S. Senior Open.

The 54-year-old Sauers two-putted for birdie on the par-5 18th for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke lead over Joe Durant. The three-time PGA Tour winner had a 12-under 132 total at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge in Snoqualmie, Washington.

Sauers birdied four of the last five holes, making three in a row in Nos. 14-16.

Fowler leads at Barclays: Rickie Fowler kept bogeys off his card for the second straight day and closed with a 5-foot birdie putt for a 3-under 68, giving him a one-shot lead over Patrick Reed going into the final round of The Barclays in Farmingdale, New York.

Fowler has gone 45 holes without a bogey at Bethpage Black, the site of two U.S. Opens and among the toughest courses on the PGA Tour.

Jutanugarn leads in Canada: Ariya Jutanugarn missed a chance to take a big lead into the final round of the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open, making two late bogeys at Priddis (Alberta) Greens.

Wade speaks out on Chicago gun violence

Miscellany: NBA star Dwyane Wade’s cousin was an innocent bystander, police said, pushing her baby in a stroller near a Chicago school where she intended to register her children when she was fatally shot Friday.

Nykea Aldridge’s famous relative, who grew up in Chicago’s south suburbs, tweeted to his nearly 6 million followers about her death, saying Friday it was an “act of senseless gun violence” and posting Saturday morning that Chicago needs “more help& more hands on deck.” Wade ended both days of tweets with the hashtag “EnoughIsEnough.”

The 32-year-old mother of four recently relocated to an area on the city’s South Side, her family said. She was near the school, which is about a mile and a half southwest of the University of Chicago, when two males walked up and fired shots at a third man but hit Aldridge in the head and arm. She wasn’t the intended target, police said.

Jebet breaks world record, wins steeplechase: Olympic champion Ruth Jebet broke the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase world record by six seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Paris.

Jebet, born in Kenya and running for Bahrain, clocked 8 minutes, 52.78 seconds at Stade de France. The previous record was 8:58.81 by Gulnara Samitova-Galkina of Russia at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Quintana takes Spanish Vuelta lead: Nairo Quintana successfully attacked Chris Froome on the demanding summit finish of the Spanish Vuelta’s eighth stage to take over the lead of the grand tour in La Camperona, Spain.

Sergey Lagutin of Russia won the 181.5-kilometer (113-mile) stage from Villalpando finishing at the category-one La Camperona summit in just over four hours.

Quintana claimed the red jersey from fellow Colombian Darwin Atapuma, who fell behind the title favorites on the final ascent, which had gradients reaching 25 percent.

Masochistic wins at Del Mar: Masochistic led all the way to win the $200,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths at Del Mar, Caliifornia, earning a berth in the Breeders’ Cup. Ridden by Tyler Baze, Masochistic ran seven furlongs in 1:20.31, just missing the track record of 1:20 set by Solar Launch in the 1990 Real Good Deal Stakes.

Mystics rallies past Fever in second half

WNBA: Tayler Hill scored 18 points, Kahleah Copper and Emma Meesseman had 17 each, and the Washington Mystics beat the Indiana Fever 92-69 in Indianapolis.

The Mystics took the lead for good with a 9-0 run to open the second half, capped by Stefanie Dolson’s jumper that made it 45-39. Stefanie Dolson and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt added 11 points each for Mystics. They outscored Indiana 56-30 in the second half.

Hartley pregnant, out for season: Mystics guard Bria Hartley will miss the remainder of the season because she is pregnant with her first child.

The Mystics signed guard Leilani Mitchell after putting Hartley on the suspended list.

Miami kicks off two defensive starters

College football: Miami threw two defensive starters off its football team Saturday for NCAA violations, after a months-long probe into whether players had access to luxury rental cars.

Defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad and linebacker Jermaine Grace were “permanently dismissed” from the team, though the school is offering to continue providing financial aid until they graduate from Miami.

Western Michigan players arrested, suspended: Western Michigan football coach P.J. Fleck and team officials said in a statement that two freshmen, linebacker Ron George and wide receiver Bryson White, were suspended after being arrested early Saturday morning off the Kalamazoo campus. Officials made no comment about why the players were arrested.

Radwanska wins Connecticut Open

Tennis: Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska completed a dominating week at the Connecticut Open, beating Elina Svitolina 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the final in New Haven, Connecticut.

The Polish star will go into next week’s U.S. Open as the No. 4 seed.

Spain’s Busta wins first tour title: Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta won his first ATP World Tour title Saturday, beating countryman Roberto Bautista Agut in 6-7 (8), 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the Winston-Salem (North Carolina) Open.
