Pac-12 roundup: Stanford knocks off No. 6 Southern Cal
Kevin Hogan passed for 279 yards and two touchdowns, Remound Wright rushed for three more scores and Stanford opened Pac-12 Conference play with a 41-31 victory over No. 6 Southern California on Saturday night in Los Angeles.
Austin Hooper and Devon Cajuste caught touchdown passes as Hogan finally beat USC for the first time in his career, snapping the Trojans’ two-game winning streak in this lively in-state rivalry.
Christian McCaffrey rushed for 115 yards for the Cardinal (2-1, 1-0 Pac-12), who scored just six points in their stunning season-opening loss at Northwestern. They looked more like their usual powerhouse selves during a 474-yard offensive performance at the Coliseum, where they’ve won four times in their last five trips.
Cody Kessler was 25 of 32 for 272 yards and three touchdowns, but USC (2-1, 0-1) couldn’t match the steady production of Hogan, who went 18 for 23 behind his dominant offensive line.
(10) UCLA 24, (19) BYU 23: Nate Starks scored on a 3-yard run with 3:25 remaining, Paul Perkins rushed for 219 yards and a touchdown, and the Bruins (3-0) rallied to beat the Cougars (2-1) in Pasadena, California.
Tanner Mangum drove the Cougars to the Bruins 42-yard line, but his fourth-down pass was intercepted by Myles Jack.
(12) Oregon 61, Georgia State 28: Jeff Lockie made his first start for the Ducks (2-1) a winning one, throwing for 228 yards and two touchdowns in a rout over the Panthers (1-2) in Eugene.
Royce Freeman ran for 101 yards and a touchdown for the Oregon.
Nick Arbuckle threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns for Georgia State
Lockie replaced Vernon Adams, who was resting with a broken index finger on his throwing hand.
(20) Arizona 77, Northern Arizona 13: Anu Solomon completed 25 of 35 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns in a little more than a half of play, and the Wildcats set school records for points and total yards in a rout of the Lumberjacks in Tucson, Arizona.
Arizona broke the mark for points set in a 74-0 win 94 years ago over UTEP.
(21) Utah 45, Fresno State 24: Devontae Booker ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns, and the Utes (3-0) had two scores on special teams and one on defense in a victory over the Bulldogs (1-2) in Fresno, California.
Utah defensive tackle Stevie Tu’ikolovatu recovered a fumble by Fresno State quarterback Chason Virgil on a sack and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown to put the Utes up 10-3 late in the first quarter.
California 45, Texas 44: Jared Goff passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns and the Golden Bears (3-0) survived a wild game with the Longhorns (1-2) in Austin, Texas, when Texas kicker Nick Rose missed an extra point with 1:11 left to play.
Texas freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard had scored on a 45-yard run to cap a rally that brought Texas back from 21-points down.
Colorado 27, Colorado State 24: Tedric Thompson blocked Wyatt Bryan’s 27-yard field-goal attempt in overtime and Diego Gonzalez atoned for a miss at the end of regulation by hitting a 32-yarder, powering the Buffaloes (2-1) past the Rams (1-2) in Denver.
Oregon State 35, San Jose State 21: Seth Collins ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and the Beavers (2-1) scored 21 unanswered second-half points to beat the Spartans (1-2) of the Mountain West Conference in Corvallis, Oregon.
